While I don't spend too much time in the car, I do occasionally catch snippets of financial experts on the radio. They tend to fall into two broad categories. First are the Sunday morning hosts promoting their stay at home stock trading option strategy with no risk and guaranteed returns. Right. Second are the day time hosts trying to solve all of your financial problems in 30 seconds or less. That usually works out really well.

Since I will probably never appear on a radio show, I thought it would be fun to pretend how I would handle caller questions. Because attention spans are getting shorter, I'll be even more brief. Here we go, financial planning and life advice in 10 seconds or less per caller.

Q.  Should I buy or rent my next house?

A.  Yes

Q  I'm expecting a bonus next month. Should I invest it or pay down my mortgage?

A.  Yes

Q.  Should I take a withdrawal from my retirement account to pay for college for my children?

A.  No

Q.  Do you believe in active management or passive indexing investment strategies?

A. Yes

Q.  A friend told me about a really hot (insert latest fad here) stock for only $2 a share. Should I buy some?

A.  No

Q.  My mother-in-law says I should...

A.  (cutting off caller) No

Q.  My wife says I should...

A.  (cutting off caller) Do whatever she says, it will make your life easier.

Q.  I'm thinking about buying a boat. How big of a motor should I get?

A. The one bigger than you're thinking about.

Q.  I'm getting engaged soon. How much should I spend on a ring?

A. How big is her best friend's ring?

Q.  I visited (insert Latin American country here) and it was great. Should I buy a condo there?

A.  Sorry, I must have missed the question. Hello? Hello?

Q.  What do you look for in a potential client?

A. Nice people who take advice well and are looking to become financially independent.

At this point, we'd break for a commercial, and I'd probably have my headphones taken away... While some of the responses are tongue in cheek, most are very realistic. The answer to a single financial question can be completely opposite depending on the circumstances.
